We went to DT's thing last night and as much as I prefer not to go to funerals or to church, it was actually fine. At the church where DT attended and where his wife is some sort of minister, and where we walked in to see DT for the last time, on the overhead screens they were showing a slideshow of some highlights of his lifetime, and the captions called him "Brother Daryl," which felt more than appropriate.
He looked good, he looked like Daryl, which usually isn't the case when it comes to corpses. But he had on a great suit, and he'd been shaving his face in this sweet looking close-to-his-face beardish/moustache-y thing. I thought that for as sick as he'd been, he looked just like himself. I started to cry as soon as I saw him, even more so because I half-expected him to get up and say, "Hey, how you doin...." Jackie came over and gave me a hug and said, "..it's gonna be o.k." She told me that. His widow. Reassuring me. She said, "Believe me, he is better off this way..."
We went over to one of the pews and sat with ChrisCampbell for a little while and Chris was looking up at the screen and said, sort of loud, "Hey look at the one with Daryl on the horse, that was at my house, I took it..." He cackled and said, "he was scared out of his mind hahaha..."
Royce said (loud), "Hey remember when we had those air hockey tournaments at Magic Mountain?"
(Both laughing..)
"And everyone would leave for lunch at the same time to watch us and Ron was like, "Hey. You all can't leave for lunch at the same time!"" (more laughing)
It went on like this for a few more minutes and I looked around and saw the somber faces glancing over at the banshees, and I whispered, "you guys, shhhhh...."
Silly....
Anyhow, on the way home Royce said to me,"With us, it sort of was the unlikeliest of brothers." Yes, it was like that.
I asked RW, "Did Jackie and Daryl get along pretty well?" And he was like, "Yeah they got along fine, you know, there were times.... well, no marriage is perfect... "I let him trail off with that. And I loved him for the loyalty spoken in the leftover silence. There was no giving away any of Daryl's secrets even in death. RW said to me, "It's hard to see a friend die." I said, "Poor Daryl. Poor you. I'm sorry this happened." And with that we both sighed.
In Royce's toolchest he has a paper that they all signed when RW left the dealership in 2003. On it was written that of they lost touch they would all meet again at this certain place on the date they parted, it was in June sometime, in the year 2030. They stayed in contact, but Royce kept the paper. He meant to take it last night to give it to Jackie. I thought it was something he ought to just go ahead and keep. You never know.
Not to leave on a sad note again, here is a sweet coincidence today: I woke this morning thinking that Mama Neal might need some wood to burn in her fireplace this winter. And within 3 hours my phone rang and it was her. And she does. Wood is on it's way Mama Neal! Be careful, you'll make a believer out of me yet, with that kind of magic, sixth-sense thing you have going on. :)
And here is her son Bobby's latest addition to the music world, playing his part in "laying the foundations of love." (Did I just repeat that lyric? I really did. I feel hopeful.) :)
