I didn't tell you this yesterday, because I didn't speak to you, but I got an email. From my neighbor H and she said, "Oh, by the way, M (down the street) is friends with the dog warden and is going to set a trap for that grey cat who is harrassing all the cats on our street." I wrote back and said, "I think I know where the grey cat lives do you think we ought to go and tell it's owner?"
I know that's a stupid response, to go and tell the owner of the cat your trying to trap that you're out to trap it. And H wrote back to me, "In my humble opinion, they probably don't care about him very much or they wouldn't let him run around like they do." And I didn't respond, but I was thinking, "Cats are cats. Jesus. They do what they do. I don't think manners are at the top of their list."
And I let BK outside all the time. She likes to play and eat bugs and the outdoors is her catbox. She's a bit of a feral kitty... until naptime. My thought was also, if there weren't other cats outside, like H's for example, then the grey cat wouldn't have any other cats to harrass. I wanted to point that out, I wanted to say, "Whoa, wait a minute, your cat Larry lives outside and is practically beating down my door to get inside my house sometimes." But I didn't. And I've noticed that Larry has been out of sight for 2 days... to keep him trap free, I'm sure. But which won't last long and you know why? Because he's mean to H's other cats and so they skedaddle him out the door as soon as he starts his territorial boycat stuff!
Anyhow, instead of raising unneighborly ire with my next door neighbor (who I generally love, but find her tendencies toward revenge a little irrational), I went on a mission to track down the grey cat's owner.

I'm so glad, because cats are cats. And I've noticed our society is turning into this "keep cats inside for their own good and because if you don't you obviously don't love them enough" kind of deal - shelters won't even let you adopt cats unless you agree they will only be indoors. It's crazy, because cats are cats, as you say. My cats have always wanted to have a life, and that includes time outside in the neighborhood. Poor little Ripley is always scratching at the doors and windows trying to get out, but we agreed she has to wait until spring when she's at least one year old.
Bloggin' on your blog...
This is good, the last paragraph like the beginning of a detective story. Will the grey cat's owner ever be found (yes, of course he will), and if so, what will she look like? Who would have thought that such an ordinary occurence would set off a train of events that would keep the nation in the grip of fear and turn the narrator into a national hero? But I digress. We'll just have to see what happens next.
You must do a follow-up and let us know what happens.
You should tell the gray cat's owner (insofar as cats have "owners"). Either restrain the gray cat or it's gonna be trapped & go away, simple enough choice.
