Winter Morning 2

So he’s in the kitchen drying the last of the dishes and kind of talking to himself, but loud enough so she can hear ~ something about, “ I was talking to Norm down at Kiflinger’s yesterday and he said it might be a few days before they could get the trucks up here to plow….” No answer from her so he sort of mumbles, “we might be snowed in for awhile unless we try getting outta here today sometime…”

He turns around 'cause he hears the one floorboard by the table squeak and he sees her walking kinda slow and looking down at a box. He’s like, “Well, where’re the ‘shoes?” and she’s kinda distracted and goes, motioning with her thumb …”Oh um, they’re up.. there, on the, um, thing by the …back bedroom.”

He says, “What’s that?” And she tells him, “Look, it’s that sailboat model we picked up last year in Rutherford,” and turns it around to show him.
“Huh,” he goes, “Where’d you find it?”
“On the top shelf in the linen closet. I looked in there a million times and never saw it, but, well,.. here it is. That’s funny.”

He’s like, “ Lemme see it a minute,” and she hands it to him and he says, “Wow, it’s a nice one too… Well, make sure you put it in the same place so we can find it the next time we come.”
She doesn’t say anything for a second, and then goes, “What if there isn’t a next time…”
“Whaddya mean, ofcourse there’ll be a next time..”
“No I mean, what if this is it? Our chance to … you know, put it together.”

He’s like, “Well I think we should probably consider getting outta here today so we don’t get snowed in…”
She goes, “Maybe. Or maybe we should just stay.”
“That’s probably not a good idea, we could be stuck for awhile….”
She’s like, “You're prob’ly right, but…”
“But what? I don’t see the sense in taking this much further. I mean, we probably have time to take a walk and then get our stuff packed and get going…”
“Or,” she says, “we could stay…”
He shakes his head and goes, “What’s the purpose in that? I mean it’s gonna be a mess out there..”
She’s like, “We could stay and,” she puts her finger on the box, “put this together.”
“Yeah, but why would we do that? Everything around us is frozen solid, the pond is almost iced over, we couldn’t even sail it. I mean, we really couldn’t do anything with it at all….”
“Yeah we could…”
He goes, “And what's that?
And she says, “We could build it.”
