Tired of the bitter taste and the dark enfolding winter
this enwisened bug
who once was enticed by a red leaf that belongs in the tropics
now in a hurried kind of crawling
makes it's way to the outskirts
tips forward and finds the edge of the world
only to turn and make its way back
to the safety of a branch within
Settled in it's crunchy jacket
twiddling in muli-legged boredom,
waiting maybe for the hunger
to turn it another direction
remembering hopeful that daylight will come again
and the glass will magnify the blazing luminary
offering another window to a poorly situationed creeper
who by that time maybe will have fallen hopeless into dark soil
having waited too long for the opportunity...
Unfortunate because a Lost Dutchman in Apache Junction
Could have told it a thing or two about the sun
A hundred and fifty years ago
Superstitious mysteries
How beyond this place there were dragons
And formidable warriors
But now that we have a way to harness the cool wind
And the mighty water
There's no worry about thirst and burned skin
And thanks to Columbus no fear of falling off
The edge of the world
The Indians are scalping cheap jewelry now
Bank of America offering gold nuggets and thrills
So we pack our things in a motorized wagon and
U-Haul our way to the places that once were wild.
