Blueberries

Well I have officially started adding blueberries to my personal menu. I read that they are full anti-oxidants and are considered a super-food. That is a SUPER food utterly bursting blue with phytonutrients.

I put my blueberries in a blender with some organic vanilla yogurt, and is it good you beg to know? Is it? Um, no, but I'll get used to it.

But in preparing them it did put me to mind of that little book, "Blueberries for Sal" by Robert McCloskey. The one where Sal and her mother go out to pick blueberries for canning, and on the other side of the hill is a Mother Bear and her cub, lumbering and eating and doing their own winter preparations.

When it comes to bears I always think of them as lumbering, but I saw one once in the rockies running in a meadow between forests, and it was pretty damn fast.

There is a photograph that comes to my mind, one that often got passed around at home and it was taken by my dad in Colorado when I was a small child. I was sitting on a large boulder I had climbed and apparently I told him it was my mountain, which seems still to thrill him. He will say out of the blue, "There is 'bear on her mountain." Even when the picture is not around, he'll say it just like he pulled it out of a photo file in his mind.

So anyhow, he calls me bear which is embarassing, but I live with it. Sometimes we will be out at the store and he'll go , "hooo bear.." to get my attention and I'll point to his back if people look at us and act like I'm putting a bottle up to my mouth. My dad is not a drinker, but I like to pretend that he is in public when he does embarrassing things. He's a darling man but oh my god, he says some things.... geez, I should do a whole 'my dad' blog. But usually what he talks about is generally conservative, he rarely asks for anything and he's reserved, but sweet about it.

So god, where was I going with this? Oh nowhere. As usual.

Speaking of Pop he called me yesterday, "So what's been goin' on?"

"Oh not much daddy, how are you?"
"Just FANTASTIC." (he is one of the leftover motivated Zig Ziglar people)
"Good"
"Where you been?"
"Right here brotha, missing you..."
Silence... and then he goes, "So if you come over today you might not catch me, but you can sure find me here tomorrow...."
"O.k then, I'll see you tomorrow Pop."

Tomorrow is today. I think I'll make some muffins outta these blueberries. He really likes blueberries too.
